The Red Pyramid of King Sneferu
The red pyramid is the highest among the pyramids of Dahshur, and it is called “The Red” due to the tendency of its stones to the red colour. It was covered with a layer of white limestone from the quarries of Tura, south of modern Cairo, which was removed in the Middle Ages for reuse in construction.
The Red Pyramid is one of the three pyramids built by King Sneferu after the curved pyramid, and the third pyramid is called the Pyramid of Meidum. The pyramid is the third largest Egyptian pyramid after the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre in Giza.
– The “Red Pyramid” is the first pyramid to take the full pyramidal shape. They succeeded in building a complete pyramid after several attempts. The “Red Pyramid” engineers learned from their past mistakes in Dahshur and Meidum, so this pyramid was the first real pyramid in Egypt. The residents called it The locals nicknamed the “Bat Pyramid”, and the “Red Pyramid” at the time of its construction was the highest stone building in the world.
The pyramid rests on a foundation made of several high-quality layers of limestone from Tora. On the other hand, the core of the pyramid is made of reddish limestone blocks extracted from quarries near the pyramid, where the current name of the red pyramid comes from the colouring of this material.
– All the corridors and rooms of the pyramid are located above the base of the pyramid in the heart of the bricks, and it is the first and only pyramid that does not contain underground passages, where it can be imagined accelerating the work on the pyramid by dispensing with the underground components.
The entrance to the pyramid is located on the northern wall at the height of 28 meters and is moved 4 meters from the central axis to the east, where the descending passage leads down 62.63 meters at an angle of 27 degrees to the base of the pyramid. The height of this corridor is 0.91 meters, and its width is 123 meters. At the foot of the descending corridor is a short shaft to prevent rainwater from entering the rooms during construction.
– When entering the pyramid, we find a corridor ramp for a distance of 60 meters to the ground level. This corridor takes us to another horizontal corridor, which also leads to a room with a ceiling that rises more than 10 meters. At the end of the first room, there is another corridor that takes us to another room. It is similar to the first room, and what distinguishes that room is that it is located directly in the middle of the pyramid.
– The entrance to the corridor leading to the main burial chamber rises 8 meters above the ground. The main burial chamber has a high and distinctive ceiling, and some wooden stairs have been installed in the corridor leading to the burial chamber so visitors can climb to this corridor.
– Some of us believed that there were no pyramids other than the three famous pyramids, “Giza Pyramids”, but based on the hadith of Dr Zahi Hawass that the pyramids of Egypt discovered so far exceed 124 pyramids. There are many of them under the sand and are still not discovered until now.
